Team Polizei says about "Polizei" E39 M5...:
"mechanically superior to virtually any police car currently in
service anywhere in the world"

Well I beg to differ...

I drag raced a Gallardo down the back straight of VIR in an E46 M3 a
couple of times (loosey goosey track event in Dec.), I gave him the
pass wave but I kept my foot in it both times (and the E46 had SMG so I
wasn't loosing much time shifting). Those darn things can move! He
probably had 4-5 car lengths on me and the E46 indicated well over
140mph before I'd stop glancing at the speedo to find my braking point.
That Gallardo was cooking! I think whomever was driving must have
been a road racer, I saw a couple of his passing maneuvers and they
were very racer-like. That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :-)

Hello.
Regarding a 1992 BMW 325is coupe. Black on Black. 5 speed manual.
Approximately 200k miles.
Engine runs ok but idles rough and stalls on occasion. Paint is decent
but is starting to fade.
Could probably use new brakes and tires. Heat, AC, sunroof, radio, and
passenger window don't work.
Door panels are starting to fall off. Headliner is stapled up in
places. Drivers leather seat is ripped.

How much would you pay for this car ?
Would this be a good candidate to convert to track or autocross duty ?
The things that don't work would probably be ripped out anyway.
Maybe it's more useful as a parts car ?
Anyone near Maryland looking for a car like this ?

The car isn't mine. I'm asking for someone else who lives there and
wants to sell it.
Thank you for any comments.

Considering working models of these cars go are in the
$3-$4k range, this one would probably go for about
$1800-$2k at the most.

I was going to say $1500 since it sounds like it needs a *lot* of
maintenance. If it's rusty I would pass regardless of price.

Nothing personal but I wouldn't take it if you gave it to me. With
200K miles on it and given all that is wrong with it, it could easily
cost more than it is worth in parts just to make it roadworthy. BTDT
a couple of times, if it hasn't been taken care of, I don't want to
have to catch up with potentially 14 years of no maintenance on my
dime.

If it had 200K on it with all of the service history documented and
almost everything working that's another story but it sounds like it's
ready for the crusher IMO.

Subject: E30 Rear shock mount
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

For the past several days I have been hearing this sound from the back of my
car. The best way to describe it is that it sounds like I have a box of
guinea pigs in the trunk. While driving I get a chittering squeaking noise.
Last night I was able to localize it to the passenger side rear shock mount.
Today I looked at it. I either have it together wrong or it is blown. I have
the nylock nut, the big dished washer (concave up), then the mount. If I
bounce the car, I can see the nut-washer-metal sleeve or shaft assembly
moving about 1/4 inch. It looks like it slides through the rubber part. From
the photos, It appears that it was assembled correctly and that the steel
sleeve has ripped out of the rubber part. Bummer.

Questions:

1) Was it assembled correctly (cupped washer facing up)?
2) Is it blown?
3) If 1) and 2) are true, what causes this to happen (these mounts aren't
that old)?
4) What is a good replacement? I know that there are parts off other chassis
that are sometimes beefier than the stock E30 but interchange. Is there one
for this?
5) Is there any harm in turning the washer upside down to stop it from
clunking about back there until I replace the mount?

The real question is, do you have one of the big dished washers (concave
down) on the underside (on top of the shaft below the RSM)?

Joe,

Apparently the E46 M3 stock RSMs are a bit beefier and
fit perfectly fine across all 3 series since the E30.
Should work better for you.

Why, yes, I do. I had to go check to be sure, but it is there.

These were the stock replacement parts I got from Bavarian Auto. I don't
recall a particular brand beyond that...

They have about 15-20k miles on them.

The springs are stock 325i springs and the rear shocks are stock replacement
Boge (now Sachs, I guess).

I am betting that the great Worcester potholes got this one. The roads here
are bad.
