One family-owned 1980 528i, White with Navy leather interior.
Just passed CA smog check this week with great numbers. This car is
old, a bit tired, but healthy. Maintained by Bill Arnold, and has over
350k miles. If this doesn't scare you, then read on.

Body: is quite good for it's age, some scrapes and small dings and a
dent or two, but very straight and presentable. Needs a rear side
marker light lens (cracked, but still works), and one piece of trim.
Trunk lid looks like it got hit on it's lip and compressed slightly, it
bowes a bit and seems to have leaked in the past. Truk lid cover is
torn and moldy in spots. tool kit is nearly complete, including the
original blue cloth with roundel. Jack and spare are fine. Trunk
carptet dirty, but all plastic trim pieces in place and unbroken
(except spare tire cover is broken). Differential mount was repaired,
have the receipt. Windshield replaced a few years ago, so it's good
except for the dang rock chip. I just added a passenger door side view
mirror (it came without one), manually operated but the proper mirror.
Driver's power mirror works. rear defrost works, as does heater and
ventilation system. All lights work. Problems: A little rust under
windshield near A pillar - just surface, no perforations, and rust
around trunk lip. Otherwise, clean - including spare tire well.
Headliner is torn above passenger's head around sunroof, and dash has
some cracks. But the horn works, and I just put on a decent leather
steering wheel cover!

Engine: New oil pump, and plenty of receipts for regular maintenance.
cylinder head casting date is 1981, the family I bought it from said
the engine came out of an early '80's 733i. It pulls like the
higher-compression 3.3 liter motor. Engine starts, runs and idles fine
(otherwise would not have passed smog). Clearly has been maintained. No
leaks seen.

Transmission: Looks like a 3HP22. Shifts smoothly and just fine, kicks
down at right moment. No visible leaks.

Drivetrain: No real bad noises, diff seems fine, diff mount has been
repaired (have receipt), brakes seem fine, but I haven't checked them.
There is a clunking from rear on decelleration if not done smoothly,
not sure if it's a mount or bushing.

Car runs well, handles well, clearly has decent shocks and struts.

Blaupunkt AM/FM cassette player, removeable face, with remote and a
portable CD player plugged in. Sunroof works, but slow. Windows all
work, but driver's is slightly off adjustment, so it leaves a tiny gap
when up, unless you lift window by hand for last bit of travel.

I just put in some navy leather rear seats and parcel shelf from an '86
535i (stock ones were shot, but you can have them if you are a purist).
Fronts are shot as well, right now I've plugged in a blue cloth Recaro
LX (older but nearly perfect), and also have navy leather E28 front
power seats if you want to make the switch. I may want to keep the
Recaro, depending on the final sale price, so I'll come up with some
sort of seat option.

Oh yeah, central locking is sticky, right now they need to be cleaned
(taking off door panels), so driver's door and trunk work together, but
not other doors - they're manual. Still working on getting some pics.

In Oakland, smogged, $1,700 obo.

Subject: TIS, ETM, ETK, KSD, etc for 99 M coupe?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

With the intent of keeping & maintaining my 99 M coupe for a long time,
which of the following products would it make sense to purchase?
(I already have the latest Bentley Z3 manual)

TIS: Technical Information System - repair manuals/service bulletins
ETM: Electrical Troubleshooting Manual
ETK/EPC: Electronic Parts Catalog
KSD: Commercial Service Data System - defect codes/factory repair flat rates
EBA: Accessory installation instructions
???: Parts Price List, Wholesale Purchase Links ???

Any others? Are these products available for sale somewhere at a
reasonable price - BMW dealer, Ebay, Central Letter Shop in Fairfield NJ?

Thanks in advance for any advice, appreciate it.

These would be the 3 I'd recommend. I routinely use my ETK, am using the
TIS more and more, and hoping I won't really need the ETM <g> (but the
wiring diagrams are good to have).

I find TIS the most helpful, ETK is next, although almost the same info can
be found on bmwoemparts web site.
ETM is only helpful to troubleshoot electronics, but every somewhat serious
repart requires special diagnostic tools. I think I have KSD too, but it's
basically a factory repair LOE estimator.

You can get the gray market CDs on ebay and such. Note - they are basically
"back up copies"... I bought mine from a dude in UK at ebay.uk.
Ebay is really going after these sales, though,

Good Luck!

Nothing gray about it: Those are copyright violations. Please respect the
rights of the owner, by using legitimate channels like the dealer, Central
Letter Shop, and Bentley.

No BMW involved, but thought this would be of interest. Two guys bought
a Viper in 2003. The first diff went out 71 miles after the 500 mile
break in. Four more diffs went out in the next 6 months. Manufacturer
refused to pay for the 6th diff! These guys won in court even though
they admitted running it at the dragstrip. It would be interesting to
read the actual case.
