All:

I've had an illuminated ABS light on my 10/94 build 1995 M3 for a while and
just got the BMW tech to read the codes. The error came up as code 17,
"Fault in the power supply of all solenoid valves or operation of front left
inlet valve faulty". The dealer claims the usual suspects in this case are
the control unit ($$$$) and the ABS pump ($$$$$). This seems like a hasty
conclusion to my amateur self. Do any of you know of any usual suspects
that might be worth checking before throwing down big bucks for these parts?

I've pulled and cleaned all four ABS sensors and pulled and cleaned both ABS
relays. So far no luck.

Thank you,

Kevin

Been there on a 1996 328i without ASC.

I had the exact same code. Went to two online parts dismantlers,
Zionsville for one part, Vines for the other. Around $250 together.

Solenoid goes out in the pump and takes control unit with it. $3200 at
the dealer.

If you just replace the control unit, first application of the ABS takes
out new control unit. If you just replace the pump, the control unit
output transistors are still bad and it won't clear codes or actuate.

Alex,

I completely agree. When I was doing DE's at Road Atlanta back in '98 and
'99...I recall being instructed by a couple of CR's. First of all, they gave
me a fair assesment of my driving and secondly...they encouraged me to take
the next step. It made me feel like I knew what I was doing...well almost!
Anyway, it was because of a few CR's that helped influence my decision to go
racing.

I think it would be a great idea for BMW CCA CR'ing to come up with a
brochure that would be handed out to each and every student attending a BMW
DE. The brochure would provide info on steps to becoming a CR. The goals of
CR'ing should be clearly stated along with the various paths to becoming a
club racer and level of prep for each class. I also think it might be a good
idea to include a base budget for taking the car to the "next level". This
might encourage more people to keep their cars stock and then modify as they
get more seat time and money.
I also think it would be important to highlight the "hot shoes" in each
class. Give people a sense of why they chose the class they did and what
they've learned from the process of becoming a club racer.
I don't know, just throwing things out there to see what might stick. I'm
sure the smarter ones on this list could take this idea to the next level. I
do think it would be good to give students a long term perspective on the
sport they've decided to participate in. Anyone else agree?

My son is asking for a good book on engines, I believe theory and science
behind them.

I know there have been one or two mentioned at times on the Digest but I
can't recall their titles.

Runs rough when I'm on the gas and RPMs are below 2500-3000.
Will sometimes miss beat when idling.
Seems much happier with the transmission in "S3" mode - higher revs seem to
help.
Rarely rough running will continue above 3000 RPM.

I ran a tankful with Techron concentrate - no major change

Seems to run fine when cruising on the highway - until I try to pass. Seems
to be better when cold.

Haven't checked plugs or anything yet - that's coming soon.

Any BTDT ideas?

I should have mentioned - the stomp test yields no errors - "1444"
