Ben has two E30s with the 5 lug conversion. One using E36 components
(E36 front struts) and 318ti rear trailing arms.

The other uses an E30 M3 suspension. This is the one we put on the
track car with Advanced Design dampers, Ground Control camber plates
and coilover conversion. The car with the E36 components used a Sachs
coilover kit that we removed but it handled pretty well. It was
tracked and autoxed quite a bit with very good results. The one with
the GC suspension is awaiting project completion (Euro engine swap).

I'm not sure on the half shaft question but I want to say stock ones
will work just fine.

Barry,says:

the windows just to steal it."

Yea, but that was because the NA set up on the '77's was a Clarion a very
good unit for its time and easy to tear out of the dash. Reminds me about a
friend who had a 7 which he parked out in front of a restuarant one day.
This was parallel parked against the curb on a very busy road and clear
line of sight from a row of restaurants along the road. Literally a
sidewalk separation between the parked cars and windows. The stereo was
ripped out and no witnesses. Amazing.

Look for a round connector covered by a plastic cap.

Probably you have the Pioneer KE83zbm (+/Mode/- buttons for
tone, balance, fade) or Alpine CM5908 (infrared finger slot)
radio. The Pioneer has round connector to the right of the
rear speaker connectors. Don't know about the Alpine.

If you have the Pioneer, email me for more info.

While we're on this subject, I have a radio question. My
6/90 build
E34 M5 has what seems to be an old style radio with
individual plugs
for the speakers, power, etc. The car has a harness for a
CD player,
but there appears to be no place to attach such a connection
to the
radio. Does this mean my radio cannot control a CD changer?

The slightly newer versions have the large square connector
for the
radio.

I'll answer this similarly to Rich, but from a different perspective
as I don't find thrill in watching guys with twisted panties. That's
just weird ;)

What handling benefit does converting to 5-lug hubs offer?

There is a nominally wider selection of wheels available as a result
but for the money you'd spend just to convert the car you could
already have bought a set of nice 4-lug wheels.

And all those M3/E46 17" wheels are really heavy to hang off an E30.

I'd stick with a nice set of Team Dynamics or Kosei 15x7s to fit the
stock hubs, were I spending my money on this project.

Although I do think a set of E36 bottlecaps are a nice stealth look
that only a very few would ever catch to appreciate the work you put
into the conversion...

I saw this on another automotive website yesterday. I'm interested

On a related note, E46s also have the shock tower crowning problem,
and I've seen cases where one of the weld seams between the shock
tower and the inner fender breaks open as well. I believe this has
made it to Roundel's TechTalk column recently. I'm starting to
wonder if a strut brace might be a worthwhile investment on my E46.

If this is the same car I'm thinking about (blue 323Ci?), didn't it have a
strut bar already? I'm tempted to hijack Gary Derian's comment on
jackstand safety and testing for this: if you push a car hard enough, you
can send it into orbit. If you hit a pothole hard enough, you'll break
something. I think Mike Miller needs to find a new soapbox.
