Hello Gruppe:

After much research, I must admit I am still learning (and confused) about
the purchasde of a 2-post lift for my garage. Not wishing to take up too much
time & space here, I just have one question:

Does anyone own a Bend-Pak Lift (2 Post Floorplate Model preferably)? or,
does anyone know about them?...quality, drawbacks, etc.? They appear to be
ALI/ETL Certified, and made in the USA.

Thanks,

John Weese

Gruppe,

Good friend has an 93 740iL sucking all his play money out of his wallet
every few months and I am trying to help out. The trans starting slipping in
and
out of gear as his SWMBO drove it, he test drove it and it did the same.
Sounds to me like the ole Valve Body Check Ball problem, though I am indeed
the
worlds worst shade tree mechanic. He tells me that it will drive fine, then
seem to slip out of gear, the engine will race and then it will THUD into gear
which is where my DX came from. Also states that a trans problem light comes
on the dash, though he can stop the car, turn it off and back on and this
sometimes 'resets' the car and it'll work for a few more miles. Started about
a week or so ago and got worse

His mech says toasted tranny and $5500 to replace, trying to help him save
if possible. I seem to remember this being common somewhat to certain years of
the 7er. Any thoughts?

TIA,
Jim Laing

I will say that I searched for a mid-rise and found out many things. Not all
Bend-Pak lifts are made here, some or portions are made overseas, good bad or
indifferent.

There are mny brands out there and many are made by jus a few companies. If I
had the money and space for a 2-post and wanted to buy American, I would look
hard at Mohawk...even the Bend-Pak says they are good. I bought Whip, again
made here, but there are others that are very good from all over the world. I
have heard that Bend-pak's service can be spotty.

You may want to do as I did and look around and check with local lift
installers that do work for garages and such. They can be as cheap as the
others with the shipping because they buy in bulk and then you have a local
contact point.

Jay,
My e30M3 'checklist' as it were is on my website. Although I tend to replace
things way before they degrade. Force of habit.

The one thing I didn't do when refreshing the suspension was rear control
arm bushes (big one and little ones(2)/per side). The ones in there were
solid, so the PO must have replaced them at some point. Response of worn
bushes will be sloppy tail under high loads. You gotta push it to really
feel the effects, but an auto-x concern no doubt.

Replacing things CAN get pricey on this car, but what the heck...

Cheers,

Subject: [UUC] E30 M3 checklist

hey gruppe...a fellow female autocrosser asked me to check over her E30
M3...just to "go over it." i gave her the name of a BMW shop to take it to,
but she just asked me if i could do it since she knows i wont give her some
BS about having to replace things that dont need replacing to make some
money...

i told her she could go to a race shop i frequent and she could pay the shop
time there just for using their lift and have my mechanic friend there help
me to go over her car...

problem is that i dont have a E30 M3, and i'm more familiar with the E36s,
so any things i need to look out for with this car...any links/tips/advice
greatly appreciated...

thanx in advance...

Hi Craig,

Unplug that connector at the bottom of the expansion tank, clean both sides
of the contacts and reconnect it firmly. This fixed the problem for me on
both my 97 m3/4 and my 93 325is race car.

Its worth it to check if that is the beginning of a water pump going
bad. Sometimes the coolant warning sensor is correct when intuitively it
seems to be bad, and the water pump is going bad when no obvious signs of
leakage are present yet.
