chosen vehicle is late production euro 750iL, a likely recipient of the Xenons.

however, the same SLS parts show up on a similarly chosen US market car :

I knew that, just didn't think about the headlights as self-levelling,
tho of course
they might have that component to their operation. tho I suspect that in this
case the lights had some sort of mechanical levelling system on them, tho
there aren't specific components in the ETK drawings. well they're there
but they're not noted as being part of the xenon light pages.

Ben
had two cars w/HIDs, one self-levelling, one not

No, you just have to wait a few moments to get past the test pattern

Wait, five seconds of it is bars and tone, then a 10 second leader count. I
think we should get some cash back!

Subject vehicle: 1990 E30 325i

The Bentley manual calls for lubricating the plastic ball and socket
bushing on the shift lever with molybdenum disulfide, such as Molykote
Longterm 2. Not having any, I took a quick trip to Monument Car
Parts, the closest car parts place that has quality goods and actual
customer service. (The alternative is Kragen - 'nuff said.)

They did not have the recommended lubricant. The closest I could find
was Sta-Lube brake caliper synthetic grease, which contains the
afforementioned molybdenum disulfide, but also the not-afforementioned
graphite and Teflon.

Is there any harm in using this lube in the plastic shift ball and
socket bushing? Or will graphite eat the plastic or something like
that?

Thanks,

Scott Miller, lubricant novice

Yes, putting a Z3 shifter in my E30 325i, and taking the E36 shift
lever from the 325i and putting it in the '91 E30 318is. Why?

Thanks for the feedback on the lubricant.

Earlier this year I lucked into the AM/FM/single CD player head unit
probably from a Z3, and installed it in my wife's E34 525iA. (This
replaced the stock AM/FM/non-functioning cassette player.) The CD
player worked fine for months, but now refuses to play any CD we try
and returns "error" on the display after trying to read the inserted
CD. AM and FM continue to work fine.

Are there any tricks with this unit to get the CD player working
again, short of removing it and sending it in for repair?

TIA,

Scott Miller

If you do need to send it in, send it back to the Robert Bosch company
in the fatherland.

They have a hundred euro flat rate charge and send you back one that is
in all respects like new.

Or send it to United Radio in Syracuse. They swap out the unit with a
refurbished. They did it on my '96 318i radio for $75.

Good company. They were (are?) the designated repair facility for Toyota
Fujitsu radios, too.

Bosch made the stereo? I thought they were usually Alpine or
Blaupunkt.

They are actually normally Pioneer or Alpine, but the CD43 was a
Blaupunkt which is a Robert Bosch Company.

How that worked was that for an imported car, the import duty was based
upon the value of the car as imported. Depending upon pressure on the
government from the big car manufacturers here in the US, the tariffs
were quite high for an automobile to be imported.

To reduce the value of the car as imported, the manufacturers would
install the radios at the port of entry, using radios brought in from
suppliers of the automakers choosing; the tariff on radios being less
than that on cars. Many of the Pioneer units were actually made in the US.

The CD43 was used in cars built in the US (the Z3 series) and as no US
maker of car stereos then existed, BMW subcontracted those in-dash CD
players to Blaupunkt.

The CD43 really has two problems. 1) It's the only standard 1-DIN
BMW factory CD radio made 2) It tends to not be very reliable. I've
heard about some people having luck disassembling and cleaning the
transport and pickup mechanisms, but that's neither easy nor does it
work very often.
