Hmm ... yes, I see. I'm a bit wary of making it look better on laptops at the expense of the look on desktops. I'll play around and see if I can find a sweet spot.

Not in general. At least, I haven't thought about it enough to come to such a conclusion. It just feels right in this particular case. Some (most? all?) browsers let users pick the font to be used when drawing "plain text" or "monospace". Obeying that setting gives me a warm fuzzy.
