The pressure does seem to drop fairly quickly even with the machine 
off.  I think the pump just speeds it up a bit.

I have never descaled.  My machine is plumbed via a filter, and though I 
haven't measured it, I believe the water here (Sandy Oregon) is pretty 
soft.

I found Barry's descaling method in the list archives and read it over.  
I'd be willing to give it a shot, but I'm not sure how to apply it to a 
plumbed machine.
