If you've never replaced the controller I'd look at that. I had some issues that didn't seem like the controller as well. I ordered the controller and the PID at the same time because it seemed like the PID was the problem but I replaced the controller first and that fixed things. After a few days I replaced the PID as well but it's been smooth sailing since.
