one of the problems is that you are viewing this from a non-islamic-fundamentalist slant - the crazy islamic fundamentalists would certainly view the US doing nothing as a total weakness. In fact they have a history of viewing compromise as a weakness and therefore a) wont' compromise themselves and b) respond to offers of compromise with more demand, since they figure they can get what they want.
