IIRC, hybrids perform best when driven in a very non-agressive manner. Easy on the gas, easy on the brake. This isn't a very realistic picture of how most people drive.
That said, even moderately agressive (not Matt and his overpowered Bullitt ;-) drivers will see hybrids get really good gas milage. Just not the crazy-high estimate they were expecting. --Ben C.
