I learned to drive first in a Dodge Caravan, around age 10, on the
college campus where my dad taught, then in an '84 Renault Encore with
no emergency/parking brake (our driveway was steep, so we put a block of
wood behind the front tire). To put the high beams on, you had to turn
the low beams off, first. AM-only. It was a four-speed manual. Well,
four and a half, since reverse occasionally worked. :-) It was a
crappy car, but if I turned it into scrap metal, it wouldn't have been
that big a deal.

My dad mostly taught me how to drive. He was calm, relaxed, and
helpful. Once, after I'd learned to drive well, and was out just
practicing, he actually fell asleep. My mom, on the other hand, rode
with one hand gripping the door handle and one hand gripping the seat
belt below the buckle. She tensed up every time I made a mistake, which
made me very nervous, which made me make more mistakes. Like I said, my
dad ended up doing most of the teaching. :-)
