I really wonder at the Statistics sites around regarding the proliferation of "current version" browsers (pick your poison - but IE6 seems to always figure highly). Yet..... So many of our clients have Windows 95 machines running something less then version 5 browsers. We must just have the majority of the 5% or so of the world that isn't supposedly using IE6. What this means for me is...... I really have to take major pains to only use nested tables. And I can't load elaborate Javascript cross-compatibility libraries - because (despite the statistics) lots of people have Javascript turned off. And if I can't rely on these penetration statistics to be correct about the browser, how can I rely on the other statistics about the widespread adoption of Flash (whatever version), when it seems that the proportions represented in the statistics are not born out in the real life client base ? Then again, maybe it is all those lecturers teaching computer science who are educating our client base to stay with 5 year old technology??
