What a wonderful premise our country was based upon.
Unfortunately that bell curve for humanity is there because of our very
different abilities re: intelligence, emotional, social and psychological
makeup. While we may all be created equal, we are not all created equal in
a particular area (some are good at some things, bad at others). For
thousands of years to come, I don't see this as changing much. I am certain
there are many breeders who simply aren't equipped to breed
intelligently--to improve their lines; just as there are people who aren't
equipped to select a puppy who was bred and cared for properly. No amount of
education will help them because they are incapable of learning because of
lack of intellectual, emotional or psychological abilities in that
particular area. From my vast experience of talking with the public, this
group seems to be significantly large. I have seen books, articles, tv
shows, news shows, advertisements, you name it--all saying not to buy from a
pet shop--yet thousands and thousands of people still do each year. How can
they have missed knowing they should not buy from puppy mills? In the last
two years, I have yet to talk to a single person who bought a pet shop puppy
who had not heard they shouldn't buy from a pet shop--yet they still did
it--because of lack of intellectual, emotional or psychological abilities.
Some are CEO's, sports people, etc. who excell at what they do--yet they
simply cannot breed or choose correctly. As near as I can tell, we have
nearly *saturated* the market with education, but it seems we have reached a
plateau--and there is still a significant proportion of the public who is
not yet getting it..
But few are immune to peer pressure (of course some thrive on being
different!). That is why I believe we need to figure out a way to use peer
pressure to help some breeders and buyers be more aware. Make it *better*
to breed correctly and own a well bred puppy, rather than just breeding or
buying any old purebred puppy. Again, I have no answers, but I am
continually striving to come up with some.
