Terrie, usually MVD is onset at 2 years and other heart problems are the cause to heart troubles prior to that. However, if bad lines continue to be used for breeding, then the onset will lower to earlier ages. The same genetic principle that is used to raise the age of onset will lower the age if the parents heart status is reversed.
For example, breeding dogs whose onset was after 5 years will tend raise the onset past 5 years. Breeding dogs whose onset was 2 years will tend to lower the onset under 2 years. When I hear of dogs who are less than 2 years old who have MVD, it makes me wonder about the heart status of their parents and the ancestors behind those parents.
