The definition here of "Discipline of the body and the appetites by
self-denial or self-inflicted privation." would come closest, although
I've seen that specific definition described as "self-mortification"
rather than "mortification".  Makhleb seems to be about inflicting the
discipline/privation on others (to the point of death, in fact), so I
went with the latter term.  Think of extreme ascetics who torture
others more than themselves: it's turned outward instead of inward.
