Hi Dennis,
There are a couple of tips for quickly getting to the Google search
box regardless of
whether you are using DOM or group mode. One option is to set your
Safari Preferences
menu (Command+comma), go to the Advanced menu (tab to this, then
press VO-keys + space
to select), and tab to the check box for "Press Tab to highlight
each item on a web page". If you
check this Universal Access option, option-tab highlights only text
fields, buttons, and lists.
You'll be able to quickly get to the edit box in Google with just
the option-tab shortcut.
I also use the Command-Option+f shortcut to launch a Google search.
This takes me to the
Google search field on the address bar (and will open this even if
the address bar is hidden).
After Command-Option+f I type my search terms and press carriage
return to immediately
get search results.
I use group mode for navigation, and have been catching up on
reading posts -- Jacob's
comments have been very insightful on this topic, for instance.
You can also read more about setting up Safari preferences and
Google searches (using
option-tab to get to the edit box) at I Can Work This Thing:

Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Esther

HERE'S WHAT I'VE NOTICED SO FAR.
IN DOM MODE I GET RIGHT TO THE EDIT BOX IN GOOGLE, AND IN GROUP
MODE I
HAVE TO FIND THE SEARCH BUTTON THEN SHIFT-TAB BACK TO THE EDIT BOX.
