I've never considered OSX as PC-like since I've never used PCs , but did use NeXT computers in college - yes my community college had a NeXT lab in addition to Wintel ones - all those wonderful black machines ina row! The dock on MacOSX for me is in some ways like the control strip in OS9 (and 8, 7?). I had a lot of add on modules for the control strip, one of which showed me the apps running. I could drag files to the icons in the control strip to open them if I wanted. I was also a very heavy user of the Launcher. The dock is a just streamlined launcher. I can through apps, folders, files and servers onto it. BTW I keep the dock on the righthand side and don't do magnify - in case anyone is interested.
