It was my choice to have Image Capture open when I plug in the camera 
(set in prefs). Other choices are open in iPhoto, another application of 
your chosing or don't do anything, so you then can work with the camera 
as a harddrive. I've never had Image Capture erase the photos from the 
camera, so don't know what havoc in can reek. I do it by had (drag and 
empty trash).
