Since the iMac isn't dual boot, it won't help to get the scanner working.
But the adaptor should work for accessing the SCSI drives like the Syquest and Zip. And for a scanner solution, Cannon, Epson, and HP all sell USB scanners that are under $60, and I have seen them as low as $40.
