>So what
>do I need, a G4 or IMac or EMac is my problem.

If you are looking to buy new, then you can't get a G4 (well, you
probably can from some stores, but since it is an already discontinued,
no longer available from Apple, computer, I wouldn't buy it as new).

The iMac and eMac both have G4 processors, so that negates any issue of
speed. The only advantage to the G4 Tower is the expansion slots (and
dual booting).

>She has a G4 but wants to upgrade to G5 because she does a
>lot of graphics work, animation and stuff but I don't need this.

You could offer to buy her G4, that way she can apply the money towards a
G5 and you both are happy.

Or, you could look at other used Macs. There is no reason you HAVE to buy
new, and if money is tight, used can be a great option. LEM Swap list is
a good place to look, although shop around, pick up the latest issue of
any Mac magazine and have a look at the ads in the back of it, lots of
used dealers.

And don't forget Apple's "Special Deals" web page where they sell
refurbished Macs at a discount. And don't forget about possible
educational or government discounts (I know you work for a rehab center,
so I didn't know if maybe the place qualifies for either, or if you or
your wife, or someone you know is attending a qualified college, or is a
teacher in a qualified school)

>Actually I have a Umax Vista V6 Scanner with an old version of OmniPro
>and the problem is that when I went up to 9.2.2 on my B&W G3 I could not
>find a Driver for it since Vista only went to 9.0 I think.

Umax got pissy with Apple over the whole Mac Clone issue. As a result,
they really haven't bothered to upgrade many of their scanners for OS X
support. Much less upgrade for any other OS version. Its compounded by
the fact that entry level scanners can be had for $40 these days, and
those scanners are the same or better then the older Umax scanners... so
they just have no incentive to bother upgrading their drivers for older
scanners.

>My wife
>thought that if there was any hope of fixing the G3 she would take it for
>her use.

Since you have the B&W G3, there is a REALLY good chance that Phillipe is
right, and there is nothing *wrong* with the machine. Based on your
story, I'm not the least bit impressed with the repair shop you went to.
It seems like there is a decent chance that your drive failure, and the
fact that they can't get a new drive to work, are totally unrelated. The
original drive may have simply failed because drives do that sometimes.
And if there is in fact a bug in the B&W G3 that keeps it from using new
hard drives, then their attempt to put a new one in would fail as well.

So returning the G3 to service may be as simple as adding a cheap ATA/IDE
card to your computer. You should be able to purchase one for around $20.
It just slips into an open PCI slot, then you connect your hard drive to
it instead of directly to the computer.

For $20 I'd be inclined to give it a try. You may also be able to ask the
repair shop to test it... although honestly, I might be inclinded to get
the G3 and run far far away from that shop never to return to them.
