On 5/2/04, Karl.Winkelmann declared, on behalf of Doug McAdam: >Just because a modem is 56k does not mean you will ever get that speed. >The fastest I have ever seen is 53k but sometime it is also the maximum >possible speed of the dialup number that limits the connection speed.
In fact, 53k is the maximum dialup speed permitted by the FCC, so it is not possible (at least in the United States) to accomplish a higher speed with a dialup connection. I have no idea why the FCC cares about data transfer speeds on telephone voice lines.... but they do. >I have one customer who cannot connect to greater than 32k with >Earthlink's local numbers. Try using a different local number, if one >exists, and see if the connection speed differs. I learned, back when I was still using dialup, that many ISPs, especially AOL and discount ISPs, still use old and slow modems. The advice to try a different local number to dial into your ISP is great. Also, you might not be using the optimal modem script. If you don't know what I'm talking about, get help. Here's a web site which might have a free modem script that will work on your computer and provide you with a faster dialup connection: <http://www.taniwha.org.uk/> ---Jay ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
