The noise consists of a set of three short sounds spanning, together, about
one and a half seconds, with each of the three sounds being less than half a
second in duration. Each individual sound reminds me of the sound of a drive
head recalibrating, but not quite that. Each set of three sounds is followed
by a pause of a second or more, then another set of the three sounds, then
another pause, and so on, regular as clockwork. This pattern is very
regular, and far too slow to have anything to do with the bearings, I would
think. It happens only while trying to make a copy of the Messages file. The
drive makes no untoward noises in any other circumstances.
On other machines in the past, similar sounds have been traced to bad
directory files, come to think of it, which presumably give the head
incorrect instructions about where to go. I've never experienced hardware
failure with this kind of symptom. And I've been at this for over 25 years.
