As I posted a few days ago, my only solution in a similar situation was to upgrade several people to OS X. My guess is that their servers get incremental software updates -- the latest and greatest versions and bug fixes to keep things running smoothly, incorporate security patches, kill viruses, etc. My guess is also that because Apple does not support OS 9, the software authors do not worry about incorporating OS 9 compatibility into their software and patches either. I'm not talking Earthlink only, remember that I have already shared my story about having this problem with "my users" and AOL, core.com, and Charter Pipeline as well as Earthlink. Earthlink probably cannot fix your OS 9 smtp issue because they don't necessarily write all of the software that is in use in their vast network. My final guess is that your problem started exactly when they made a software update somewhere in their system. Their CSRs and techs don't know anything about the servers' routine maintenance and software patching, so the people you talk with can't pinpoint this for you, which makes both of you frustrated. FWIW, I had a similar experience earlier this summer when Charter Pipeline closed some ports that allowed me to use smtpauth for my Earthlink account (via the cable service); the techs didn't know anything about it. For two weeks I badgered them until one of them found a bit of "new" policy that described not allowing remote servers on accounts, and requiring the use of charter's servers only. Hence, my Earthlink account and my mac.com accounts now must use my charter server, and some of my mail is flagged as spam at the receiving end because the reply to address does not match the sending server.
