Sorry, but I completely disagree with this view. The issue is not whether
OS 9 is supported because that's not relevant - the issue is are the
network and applications protocols being used supported. And that's POP3,
SMTP, and at a lower layer, TCP/IP. And as far as I know, nothing has
changed in those areas that should cause older compliant software to stop
working.

Given that, since Entoruage 2001 hasn't changed, the only possible answers
is their is a network connectivity issue or the POP3 and SMTP server
software at Earthlink's end has been broken and is no longer fully
standards compliant.

My guess, given the intermittent nature of the problem, is that Earthlink
does load balancing on their mail servers and at certain times, Louise's
connection gets directed to a functioning server and at other times, when
she has the problems, gets directed to a broken server. That this "broken
server" works for some or even most clients is irrelevant - if it doesn't
fully support the POP3 and SMTP protocol standards, then it is
non-compliant. But it would not surprise me that testing is done by
testing with some popular clients rather than a formal test suite.
