One way of looking at it is "You've been told before that OS 9 is no longer supported, but have chosen to go on using it anyway because 'It works for you'. You'll upgrade if and when you're ready, or really need it for some reason." It looks like you really need it now. You could run to another ISP, with all the hassle of changing your email address. But then it will happen there too sooner or later, for reasons explained by Bellweather below. The number of Mac users on OS 8 and 9 is far too small for big software companies to bother about maintaining compatibility (if even possible) when they upgrade their own software and systems. The hard truth is that once you choose to plug into networks and systems, such as the internet, you do not have full control over your own computer and resources. You could always choose to do without email and the web, of course, just as you've chosen to do without software versions of applications developed over the past 5-6 years for OS X. But to participate, at least using Earthlink reliably, it looks as if you're going to have to consider upgrading.
