I haven't heard of that problem before, although we're only using Entourage on a fairly limited basis. The first thing that jumped out at me in your email though is that you are pointing Entourage at your back-end servers. You should ALWAYS point Entourage at your front-end server. Maybe try that and see if it helps things at all.
