Ed, I have been labeled " nerd " in the past too. You are not alone here. You have good taste in books and movies. Have you read the Hyperion series by Dan Simmons? I have heard they are really good and intend to read them in the future. They are talks of a movie too. I enjoyed reading Arthur C Clarke's Roundezvous with Rama where a cylindrical shaped starship is found in our solar system. Also there is the two volume Ringworld series by Larry Niven. They are awesome!

It has an environmental theme to it. I saw that one while living with a friend about 5 years ago. It's good. I also like Galaxy Express 999 and Battle of the Planets ( Gatchaman ).
