Hi Chris,

Congratulations on your forthcoming marriage. Bon voyage for
your trip. If I remember correctly, photography might not be
the highest priority during a honeymoon :-) On the other hand
there is also a Compuserve thread about "Canon glass vs. wife"
http://forumsb.compuserve.com/gvforums/default.asp?srv=photography&area=msgs&sec=3

Yes, I still have my EOS 1000FN QD (Rebel SII), the one with the
soft focus function and the musical self timer! As well as my
custom modifications :-)

Are you sure you want to knwo what I think of the step from
EOS 1000FN to Elan 7E? Well, you did ask ...

.
.
.

Stuff I like on my EOS 1000FN that the Elan 7E Date does not have:
1) Lighter weight (by 160gm = 5.7oz)
2) Split-image focus screen
3) Shiftable DEP mode
4) Easy partial metering with * button
5) Red, patterned AF assist light
6) Soft-focus mode

Features I like on Elan 7E that the EOS 1000FN QD does not have:
1) Quiet operation
2) AIM for A-TTL flash
3) E-TTL, especially FEL and FP flash
4) Leader out CF
5) Separate control for One shot/AI/Servo AF
6) RC-1 Infrared remote control
7) Self timer works in all modes
8) Cross sensor AF
9) Predictive AF
10) Green mode ECF
11) DOF preview
12) Mirror lockup
13) Four fps motor drive
14) Secondary * and shutter release on BP-300

Features on the Elan 7E that neither excite nor bother me:
1) ECF
2) QCD
3) Metal lens mount
4) Viewfinder diopter correction
5) Seven focus points

Stuff on the Elan 7E that I dislike, but will have to tolerate:
1) Flickering strobe AF assist
2) CF4=1 or CF4=2 disables FEL
3) Auto popup flash in Green mode (cannot override)
4) Metering mode: not displayed in viewfinder; awkward to change
5) RC-1 only does MLU with 2s delay: I still need an RS60-E3
6) BP-300 tripod mount is not aligned to optical axis
7) Not fully compatible with 550EX and 430EZ AF assist beam

Stuff Canon ought to have put on the Elan 7E at little or no cost:
... maybe another thread :-)

Stuff Canon could put on the Elan 7E at extra cost:
... definitely another thread :-)

Cheers
