Hi Dan,

Michael Reichmann write that he uses the ST-E2 to rescue the poor
low-light autofocus peformance of the D30:

According to the EOS system brochure not only does the ST-E2 have an
IR assist beam, but I think most Canon Speedlites (except macro ring
lites and 480EG handle flash) as well as the Wireless controllers
(LC-3 and LC-4) have a patterned IR beam.

Compare how well implemented AF assist was on the EOS 1000FN:
If I want flash or red-eye reduction or AF assist light, I pull up
the popup flash head. To disable it, I simply push down the popup
flash head! No need for CFs or bulky hotshoe add-ons :-)

Putting the AF assist lamp on the flash head means that it has extra
clearance over large diameter lenses, which could obscure the lamp
on the Elan II.

As I wrote, I will tolerate the flickering AF assist beam because it
works when any of the seven AF points are selected. The beam on the
430EZ only switches on for the central sensor, and the 550EX only
switches on for the five sensors arranged on the long axis.

Cheers
Julian Loke
