Hi Jonah,

Not tricks.  Technique.  The reticle focussing method was
discussed on this List, and is in the archives.

This is a parallax focussing method. If you move your head
left/right or up/down while looking at the focussing screen,
object in focus will be on the same plane as the etched
marks on the screen.  Out-of-focus objects will appear to
move relative to the marks.

Obviously works better if you use a tripod and/or a magnifier.
