Hi Kuma,
I changed from a full Minolta system to a Canon kit in the middle of last
year. I had used Minolta for over a dozen years and have no complaints
regarding their equipment.
I started shooting for a living several years ago and was moving rapidly
down the path of motorsport work. The AF operation of the Minolta was
constantly putting me behind the eight ball, particularly in comparison with
local competition which was primarily using Canon. Professional backup for
Minolta was, and is, also non-existent.
After considerable research and field testing with both the Canon and Nikon
systems I took out a business loan and bought the full Canon kit. Best thing
I ever did and I can honestly say that the Canon is a clearly superior
system - for the type of work that I do (I often shoot with a Nikon man and
am glad I went Canon - enough said?).
Having said all that though, you've put yourself up as an amateur (with no
intention of selling photos?). This being the case you would probably be
satisfied with either of the systems you are considering. The Maxxum 7 looks
like a great body and will most likely offer some commonality with other
equipment you already own. I know several happy users of Minolta AF systems.
I don't know that familiarity is a big issue as retraining will be necessary
with both.
If you are remotely considering photography as a business the decision is
clear - go with Canon (or Nikon). If not, see what suits your budget and
feels good to use.
Good luck.
