I know. It's weird, and the same thing applies to USM. I was at a
Nikon demo at a local camera shop recently- and I am honestly
curious, have no bias against Nikon, I'm sure they make great stuff
(they have a 28-105 that focuses AMAZingly close) - and I heard
someone ask the Nikon rep about USM vs SW, which only exists in their
high-end lenses, and when was Nikon going to come out with more SW
lenses. His reply was that the technology was *very expensive* and
that it was going to take time. There were a lot of people around, he
was otherwise a very nice guy, so I didn't feel like publicly
challenging him, but my reaction was "Huh???" thinking exactly what
you have pointed out above about USM. Oh well, he was just one guy,
and I don't suppose one can take a rep as official party line, but it
seems like you should be able to!
