When you already go to a camera shop don't just get prospects, etc but
actually ask to 'test' different bodies and lenses. First get some info
from Minolta's, Canon's, and Nikon's website and check out some prices
for instance at www.bhphoto.com or www.cameraworld.com. Chose a body
and lenses from each manufacturer that fits into your budget. Then with
this info go to the camera shop and ask if you could check out the
specific bodies and lenses you are interested in. Try to get some
feeling for the combinations, i.e. how fast does AF lock onto a subject
(chose a near and far one and focus from one to the other. Also try
different subject), how intuitive is it to handle the camera, how well
does MF work with the chosen lens, how well does the body lay in your
hands, how good is the viewfinder, etc.
Some comments about Nikon. The Nikons I have 'tested' have a very good
viewfinder (better then Canon and Nikon). They also have quite good
glass. The biggest drawback is that they are not as intuitive as Canon
or Minolta and because they try to be completely backward compatible
they create some incompatibilities withing their line of cameras. For
example not all features of a lens will work with all bodies. So if you
plan to upgrade your body or have a second body but different model
(which personally I wouldn't do) you might run into problems. As I
haven't used a Nikon sytem (just 'tested' in store) I can't really
comment about real-world performance, though. That is if I don't count
the Nikon D1.
