I don't think I'd agree with this in terms of USM since Sigma have
had many HSM lenses in their lineup for at least two years. For some
reason, Nikon charge a significant premium for the SW lenses, so much
in fact that they feel it necessary to continue to offer the non-SW
version in the line as well.

And, according to some, their first VR lens is dire. From the few
times I've tried Silent Wave, it seems as good as USM though.
