Sad, but true! I have the same experiences. And it seems that
 it's the same
 in every country.

 Bye,
     Hugo.

Hi Hugo, Henning,

Not a problem here in the good old USA, nothing but net! Of course it may
make a difference that I'm close to the Canon Irvine Regional Repair Center
and walk my gear into them. I've only had first rate service from them!
Fast turn arounds and no go-back repairs though I've only had to use them a
few times for my film bodies that used to get very heavy work outs. I'm
shooting less at the moment and the digital bodies have not let me down yet
but I've only had them for a year at this point.

That may be your experience Chip, but it obviously is not everyone's, even in the US. Being able to walk in to a service center is always good, whichever country you may be in. Canon Canada has disappointed me severely. Not a single items has been repaired correctly on the first try, and nothing has come back to me in less than 4 weeks without severe nagging. I've always had sufficient backup equipment to get things done, but I'm about ready to go back to Nikon, which does have a local service center and which has provided better service.

On warranty work I've had better luck buying grey market (whatever brand) through B&H and sending it to NY for warranty service than buying Canon locally and having Canon Canada deal with it.
