I, like John as an AI, work with the FAA on a fairly frequent and "real world" basis. I believe his interprtation of the rule is the correct one. Again, here is the rule in question: Sport pilot Rule Amend §43.3 by revising paragraphs (c) and (g) to read as follows: §43.3 Persons authorized to perform maintenance, preventive maintenance, rebuilding, and alterations. (g) Except for holders of a sport pilot certificate, the holder of a pilot certificate issued under part 61 may perform preventive maintenance on any aircraft owned or operated by that pilot which is not used under part 121, 129, or 135 of this chapter. The holder of a sport pilot certificate may perform preventive maintenance on an aircraft owned or operated by that pilot and issued a special airworthiness certificate in the light-sport category. Seems clear as a bell to me. Let me also add that I don't agree with this but the FAA must have over looked calling me and asking my opinion. Bill

No offense to those with opposing view, but with regard to this and Kims recent query as to how long the list of limitations will be when training and checking out in a coupe, I think there is such a thing as asking too many questions. Respectfully, Bill John said: If you revert to a sport pilot when your medical expires and a sport pilot is not allowed to perform preventive maintenance, well, …. Kim said: It appears as a number of things in the PTS book appear to be unable to be performed in my Ercoupe, i.e. slips, rudder control/practices, time under a hood, etc. I have no rudders or instruments that would permit these and a few other tasks.
