Battery exchange has been done for over 30 years in commercial and industrial
EV's.

Golf and Western make a aircraft ramp test vehicle that have two battery packs
that are 15 feet long. They slide out below the deck onto a carrier. These
battery packs are normally made by this company as a standby to a standby
generator in communications centers.

I was working with the GW technicians on a defense contract and ask them for
info on these batteries. I call the company and they said factory cost of one
battery is $125,000.00. The plates are gold and titanium back when gold was
under $400.00 a oz. They can drive a equipment van on the aircraft ramp for
400 miles.

In Germany they have street buses that have battery packs in nylon rack panels,
that also slides in from the side of the hinge compartments below the passenger
deck. These plug into a center plug in buss way. If a battery pack goes into
fault, it automatic ejects from the plug in buss bar leaving the other packs to
drive the EV.

When the bus gets back to the bus depot, they can either slid out this and
replace it with another. Or the tech can look at the cell itself which may
have which can eject itself from a buss bar located in the bottom of the rack
panel. They can just pull out that cell and plug in another one.

Again this was not cost effected for my EV, They quoted me $39,000.00 for just
enough battery cells to go 20 miles.

I'd never lease a battery. Property that is rent/leased has no value to
the leasor and is hardly every treated with respect that an owner would
use. Take a look at any rental property and see plenty of examples of
abuse.

It succumbs to the worse ailments of human behavior.

Really, home charging is the best idea of all. I think the swap is mostly
eyewash for people used to having to go out for their fuel. That and for
long voyages.

There are some advantages to leasing packs - put their care and feeding
more in the hands of the manufacturer.

I can imagine "tow trucks" like a roll back, with a battery swapper in the
bed. You call AAA and they have the tow truck pick up a correct pack and
bring it to you for swapping.
