“Theological experiments” is a *very* general notion: to live is one of them, to get some mystical experience is the most common, but to observe reality and think, and compare through dialog with other falls also on that rubric. The point is is that they did theology with the scientific attitude: modesty, observation and theorisation, with the ability to change mind as often as necessary.
