About the only time I spend working on my Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 boxes is
when I forget to change tapes, or when the VS160 drives decide to die. I
have replaced (4) VS160 drives in 6 months.  Thank God for Dell's 4-hour
parts support....

Yes, the logging is quite lame . . . but for a lean shop like mine the 
person-hours that someone would have to dedicate to being an 'expert' at 
CA or Veritas, etc. the gains far outweigh the shortcomings.
