Okay, then, my excuse for knitting in public (now that I've finally
learned how to knit - remember, I'm a weaver!):
It's the only chance that I really get to knit since I'm a mother of
three small children, work outside the home three afternoons a week,
and run a ranch.
And, because I run a ranch, and have lots of yarn from our merinos
and alpacas, knitting in public is great free advertising! When
other knitters ask what I'm making, I get the chance to gush about
alpaca and give them my business card for when they're ready to try
one of the many great alpaca projects that I have patterns for. I've
made "kits" - matching a pattern with an appropriate yarn, correct
number of skeins, and needle size. I just took the work out of
making a gauge swatch and the guess work on how much yarn one needs.

Twould be fun to come up with a list of knitting reasons or
excuses--like the surgeon who knits to keep her hands flexible, or
those who knit to keep arthritis at bay. I think mine would be
making cheap gifts :)
