Many thanks to all who responded to my iMac queries. I will use System 9, and use Eudora instead of Apple Mail. Even System 9 is so foreign to me that I have decided to get "iMac for Dummies" or some such volume. The default folder hierarchy is totally counterintuitive for me, and there is an awful lot of screen real-estate wasted on duplications of icons and menu items. I'm sure I can rearrange the folders properly and slim down the GUI, but it'll take time, and these kinds of problems are *not* what I expect from Apple.
