I'm teaching and would love to get back to the conversation with Arthur but took a moment between students just to read. Harry's keeping his powder dry. I wonder how big his magazine is. However I do agree that the subject is the point. I do have some things to say about what Arthur's comments were. Ever the gentleman leader Arthur apologized. Impressive as always, fearless leader. I will not be able to comment until tonight but I do think that the images of nations and the legacy we leave as well as the ability to design an environment that is good for all of the life on the planet is a worthy goal for scholarly types.

A number of younger Georgists favor a Citizen's Dividend. This would involve collecting the Rent (which is produced by the community anyway) and giving it back as a dividend. The difference from a Basic Income is that this isn't a handout, but a return to people of values they created. Mine would include a basic income but before that happens, citizens would have to understand that with rights comes responsibility. arthur From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Robert Stennett Sent: Monday, January 17, 2011 1:46 PM To: RE-DESIGNING WORK, INCOME DISTRIBUTION, EDUCATION Subject: Re: [Futurework] The 'New Normal' of Unemployment What would that system look like? Would it include a Basic Income for all? What else is necessary for such a system? And, then, how do we begin to change the current system to more closely resemble that system of "truth, beauty, justice and harmony"? It is all too easy to be critical of the system. I am too. Sure it would be nice to have a system of truth, beauty, justice and harmony. But ours is not that system. And for that matter there is no system past or present that has or has had those characteristics. arthur
