Does it do this every time you try to start it up? Or does it do this
sometimes?

You might try replacing the PRAM battery.  Could also be your power button
not working right, making poor contact.

If you do manage to fix it yourself for not that much money ( and the parts
for Pismos on ebay are pretty cheap ), the Pismo could end up being a handy
backup machine.
If you don't have an external hard drive that you backup your data to then
once you buy your new laptop , you could use the Pismo as one.
