Hi Kory,

Agreed - BellSouth tech support sucks although the installation
engineers generally seem to know what they are doing. I have BellSouth
at home and have been very happy with it - I just don't ever call tech
support and I don't try to use the modem to do anything other than act
like a modem.

The last time I spoke to BellSouth there were two DSL options for
home - a USB thingy or an Alcatel SpeedTouch modem. I'd recommend the
SpeedTouch Modem which is what I use at home - it's a 10BaseT network
device - I connect it directly to a NetGear DSL router and use the
Bellsouth installation CD as a Beermat.
The standard Bellsouth DSL service is a dynamic IP but since the
NetGear router supports the DYNDNS service you can register a domain
name and have it resolved automagically. This approach is completely OS
independent with the Netgear router doing NAT so that I have a private
network in the house.

If you want to try this approach I have both the Alcatel modem and
NetGear Router spare - I'd be willing to swap both for a couple of cases
of Shiner Bock...

The ASCII network map looks like this:

DSL --->[modem]---->[Router]
                       +--------------- NT box
                       +---------- FreeBSD box
                       +---------------- XP-Pro box
                       +------------- Redhat box
                       +------------------ SLIMP3
