This is not entirely correct. We gain recognition from publicity when someone does great work available in public. Recognition of achievements is generally good for self-esteem. Unfortunately there is very little publicly available awesome work done with GIMP. So anyone trying to order the team around better impresses us first :) There seems to be a widely adopted strange notion that we work for the good of the public and hence are subservient to it. I won't speak for the rest of the team, but personally I think it's bogus.
