Doug - Excellent analysis.
The key is not what Microsoft did with Windows 11 -- it what they have
done strategically as a company. They have gravitated to cloud storage,
subscription based software, cloud backup, and a mindset of the OS as
funnel to their ecosystem. The MS ecosystem increasingly removes the
user from the driver’s seat!
Think about it this way: My computing philosophy is simple:
Local-first. Predictable. Inspectable. Reproducible. The Microsoft
ecosystem is now:
Cloud-first. Adaptive. Opaque. Non-deterministic. It is not that this
is "wrong,” but it’s incompatible with how many systems people want to
govern their environment. Linux gives back the tools that most systems
people value: Predictable package management , no forced cloud
integration; no silent redirection of your files; you choose what runs,
when, and why. Linus simply respects a user's sovereignty. MS in
increasingly taking that away and saying -- "we know what is better than
you!"
What I tell people - “I didn’t leave Microsoft out of frustration. I
left because the architecture no longer aligns with how I think, work,
or teach.”
So while I still use Windows OS, I no longer use Office 365 (Libre
Office), Outlook for e-mail (eM Client), one-drive for storing files (no
cloud storage for my files), or any MS based cloud products. And
someday, I may even leave the OS.

Subject Re: [GNC] Help!
This stream makes me thankful I am a Linux user! No worrying about
hardware upgrades because some foreign Multi-National decides they
need more control of MY computer!
I just install or upgrade from the (Linux) distro repositry. Apparently
many Windows users felt the same after the introduction of W11, &
moved to Linux. Personally, I use PCLinuxOS, & have used that
distro for 15 yrs +. Linux user for 20 yrs +, & Gnucash almost as
long under Linux.
For those that would like to try Linux, one can download an image of
PCLinuxOS (& other distros too), burn the distro to a thumbdrive
using BalenaEtcher or similar, boot the distro & try off the thumbdrive
(no need to install unless you want to!) As a Windows user you will
find the system not that dissimilar to using Windows, & most of the
functionality is similar. (Did Windows copy Linux? Who knows: very TIC)
Happy New Year to all. & pls take this comment as a helpful hint, not
as a derogatory comment on Windows, that I feel has made a tactical error
on the move to W11. One can only milk a cow so far until the cow starts
complaining!

Nancy-- I think you are on the right track now. My bet is if the repair
shop assisted to get you logged into your computer -- that whatever they
used, or did, somehow may now be interfering with your ability to
install GNUcash.
Without be too wordy - GNUCash is open source. Many virus-protection
softwares do NOT like open source because they are excellent candidates
to get viruses or Trojans attached to them. So they err on the side of
conservatism and if they do not think they know the source they block
it. This is why you see several "false" positives. If you think about
it, as a consumer, you would much rather have a "false" postive then the
opposite -- allowing unknown to get to your computer. That is why
anti-virus is a mixed blessing. It protects you well, but can also
thwart you when you don't want it to.
My gut tells me if you explain to them the behavior you are seeing --
that they will be able to not only fix the issue - but probably get
GNUCash 5.14 installed with little issue. Best of Luck to you.
