Nancy-- I think you are on the right track now. My bet is if the repair shop assisted to get you logged into your computer -- that whatever they used, or did, somehow may now be interfering with your ability to install GNUcash.

Without be too wordy - GNUCash is open source. Many virus-protection softwares do NOT like open source because they are excellent candidates to get viruses or Trojans attached to them. So they err on the side of conservatism and if they do not think they know the source they block it. This is why you see several "false" positives. If you think about it, as a consumer, you would much rather have a "false" postive then the opposite -- allowing unknown to get to your computer. That is why anti-virus is a mixed blessing. It protects you well, but can also thwart you when you don't want it to.

My gut tells me if you explain to them the behavior you are seeing -- that they will be able to not only fix the issue - but probably get GNUCash 5.14 installed with little issue. Best of Luck to you.

Ken

Under Settings>Window Security>Virus & Threat Protection>Security Providers it shows

Avast Antivirus
Avast Antivirus is turned off

Microsoft Defender Antivirus
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned off

OpenText(TM) Core Endpoint Protection ((TM) indicates a raised capital small TM indicating trademark)
OpenText(TM) Core Endpoint Protection is turned on

The latter shows no way to turn it off.

Come to think of it, I did take my computer in for repair sometime in the last few years (I was unable to logon--nothing happened when I tried). The place I took it to, across the street, got it running again, and I think they may have installed that. Unless you can suggest a suggestion today, I may take it back there tomorrow and see what they can do to help (including maybe installing 5.14). After that I won't be home until January to try and figure it out (and see whether they are able to fix it).

Thanks for your help.

Nancy

I have Malwarebytes and my GnuCash installed with no issues. Other
virus-protection software are being overly aggressive and flagging the
open sources programs as viruses. As long as you know that you are
downloading from a known sources (SourceForge) you should be OK to just
disable Avast Premium and turn it back on after you install.

Secondly, make sure to report the false positive to Avast.
