Thane,

Oh, I didn't take it that anyone was attacking my service. What
surprises me is that everyone appears to think - I should only buy on
price, and then keep my fingers crossed for service. With Apple (if
you have Apple Care) it appears you can get away shopping on price,

What time frame did it take to get it repaired?
who took his acer in to bestbuy's geek squard who reformatted his drive w/o
asking if he had performed a backup and took no precautions to warn him.
The hard drive failed a few months afterwards and even though he purchased
the warranty through bestbuy they still made him return it and they
determined that he had not kept the machine in a clean enough environment
to prevent failure and thus the warranty would not cover for a replacement.
I have to say that if you're comparing anyone to Geeksquad, then the
other person will always look good. :) This is hardly an argument
against Acer (or any other brand) but an argument against BestBuy.
BTW, I've read recently that if you smoke near an Apple laptop, they
may void the warranty, so the "not clean enough environment" appears
to be a new out for companies. In a way, I can see their point
(especially having worked on PCs where I could leave a fingerprint in
the tar on the motherboard), but it does seem a bit unfair.
Here's an Acer story. I had a client who dropped his laptop (case
and all) in a brook. We sent it to Acer, and they cleaned it,
replaced some parts and sent it back (this was under
warranty). About two weeks later, the system failed again, and Acer
replaced the laptop.
Anyway, I'm going to stop hijacking this thread and shut up. (Yeah, right.) :)
