They ask you to back up your data before you come in. At least that's what happened when I went to the webpage to set up an appointment. So I wasn't concerned about my data. If you don't have a backup, though, then you're more than likely to lose it after a computer crash. They can't solve that problem for you.

Well that seems fair. So do you know if they also give out new computers, or is the swap just for tablers?

I think they would only give you a new computer if they could determine that they one you have actually has a problem with their hardware. Since the problem could potentially be software, they'd likely force you to reformat to remove that possibility. I don't think they simple give replacement products willy nilly, as they would not be a sound model. But if they problem is indeed hardware and it can't be simply fixed, they stand up and do the right thing. We all know that software and drivers can make a PC not work right, so it's not always the fault of hardware. I'm sure they know that too. Lots of customers probably don't know the difference, though.

What happens if you buy an Apple from a third party instead of an Apple store? Do the same rules apply?
I bought my iPad 2 from Best Buy. They never even asked where I bought it.

Very interesting. And you didn't have Apple Care?

Nope. I bought a square trade drop&spill warranty for $72 for two-years. That probably means more hassle though if I had dropped the damn thing, but at least I could recover (an acceptable, but hassle-inducing solution -- life is like that most of the time). I don't think it would do be one bit of good when a sensor goes bad, but I didn't test it to see.

BTW, I'm not arguing they their computers are better than anyone elses....heck, I have PC/laptops they are lasting years and years....I'm just talking about how they treat people AFTER the sale and how EASY it is to get service...something which they have created, mind you..... I think the best way to know is to get an apple product and turn up at a genius bar...you can witness first-hand how others are getting treated. It's an open environment. Better than hearsay, IMO.
